Chapter 16

Detective Matthew Simon, finishing up the initial phase of his investigation at the scene of an afternoon burglary of a convenience store, decided to drop by his father's home before returning to his office at the police station. His growing concerns were confirmed upon arrival. His dad still wasn't clearing mail from his mailbox or watering the plants and flowers on his front stoop.

Matthew unlocked the deadbolt and front door and entered without making a sound, also correctly guessing that his father would be napping on the living room couch, not expecting him until hours later at seven o'clock. A book was folded down on the quilt atop his dad's chest.

Careful not to wake him, Matthew inspected the small house. At first glance nothing looked amiss. The indoor plants were still thriving, the rooms were tidy, and the countertops were pristine. Some of the family photo albums were stacked neatly on the dining room table directly under an antique bronze chandelier. But Matthew peered inside the refrigerator and dishwasher, finding no disturbances since the day before, and his worries intensified. Had his father not eaten breakfast or lunch? Matthew rummaged briefly in the garbage pail under the kitchen sink and still discovered no evidence of any recent meals.

Matthew fought back the tears trying to well up in his eyes as he spent several minutes watching his dad sleep. He appeared so carefree and peaceful, though Matthew something was quite wrong. Through the years doctors had few solid answers for him and Angela, his sister, about their dad's mental condition. Andrew had been recovering from extreme trauma for many years—an unlabeled condition similar or related to post-traumatic stress disorder—and leaving his house had always caused Andrew great distress. Exhausting every reasonable attempt to help him in his recovery, Matthew and Angela had found a routine and lifestyle for their dad that seemed to put him in the best state of mind. Cracks in the routine, though—major cracks at that—were now impossible to ignore.

Matthew spent several minutes outside watering the plants on the front stoop and back patio, trimming off dead leaves and stalks. He then swept debris from his dad's steps and walkways. He was about to put the broom away when he received a text alert about a new incoming email message from Pierre De Bellefort. Matthew sat on the front steps and accessed his email account on his phone. The subject line from Pierre's email was titled, "a small mystery solved." The top line in the email was a link to recorded video footage, underneath which Pierre had written: "She's the one I told you about—the redhead who lives in my building—and she is the LAST person I'd ever expect to be sprinkling around flowery good cheer."

Pierre ended the email with two laughing emojis and his initials, PDB. Nothing more. Nothing personal. Matthew appreciated Pierre's discretion. His official email account could be accessed by his superiors and land in the public record.

Matthew downloaded and watched the clip. From
